Amsterdam
Amsterdam is the capital and largest city in the Netherlands. The city lies in the province of Noord-Holland, at the mouth of the Amstel and the IJ. Amsterdam is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, receiving more than 3.66 million international visitors annually. The number of visitors has been growing steadily over the past decade. This can be attributed to an increasing number of European visitors.
Amsterdam is in addition to the titular also known as the cultural capital of the Netherlands, with most national museums (Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum), the largest orchestras (Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra), theater and opera companies and with most music and theater buildings and the Most art galleries and cinemas. Also the city offers the most training opportunities, including two universities, and has the most stores of all Dutch cities. The hospitality industry is the largest in the Netherlands, due to the extensive international tourism to the city.
Amsterdam is famous for its vibrant and diverse nightlife. The two main nightlife areas are the Leidseplein and the Rembrandtplein. Amsterdam has many cafes. They range from large and modern to small and cozy. The typical Bruine Kroeg (brown cafe) breathe a more old fashioned atmosphere with dimmed lights, candles, and somewhat older clientele. Most cafes have terraces in summertime. A common sight on the Leidseplein during summer is a square full of terraces packed with people drinking beer or wine.
Many restaurants can be found in Amsterdam as well. Since Amsterdam is a multicultural city, a lot of different ethnic restaurants can be found. Restaurants range from being rather luxurious and expensive to being ordinary and affordable.
Amsterdam is one of the most bicycle-friendly large cities in the world and is a centre of bicycle culture with good facilities for cyclists such as bike paths and bike racks. In 2006, there were about 465,000 bicycles in Amsterdam.
